Why You Should Never Share Your Toothbrush

Why not to share your toothbrush

If you’ve ever packed in a hurry for a weekend trip with your significant other or close relative, it’s likely that one of you may have forgotten to bring a toothbrush at some point. “No big deal,” you think, “we can share.” After all, partners tend to share beverages and unconsciously swap saliva in a variety of ways. Here’s what every dental professional wants you to know: Don’t ever share your toothbrush.

It turns out, this is actually a pretty big deal. Sharing a toothbrush can lead to some unwanted consequences. It makes sense if you consider that the mouth houses more than 700 species of bacteria. While not all of it is harmful, things like E. coli or staph and the bacteria that cause colds, strep throat and the flu can be transmitted via toothbrush sharing. Viruses, in particular on plastic surfaces.

Food particles can also get passed from mouth to mouth. Although not quite as dire, this defeats the purpose of brushing to begin with. You don’t want to dirty your mouth during an attempt to clean it. Because we live in an era where there’s drug stores or gas stations on every corner, it’s unlikely that you’ll be unable to purchase a new toothbrush if you forget one. For those who find themselves truly in a bind on a camping trip or other remote adventure, consider using the good-old finger toothbrush or a washcloth with toothpaste until you can find a proper replacement.

Best Oral Care Practices

Any shared toothbrush should be replaced with a new one. Regardless of who uses the toothbrush, everyone should get a new one every three months to keep things sanitary. During the three months, clean your toothbrush properly by rinsing it in warm water and allowing it to dry completely. Baking soda and alcohol are other DIY sanitizing solutions that effectively get rid of unwanted bacteria. It’s always a good idea to replace your toothbrush after you’ve been sick to avoid repeating the experience for the next several months.

Remember, daily brushing (with your own toothbrush, of course) can help minimize the bad bacteria that causes plaque and other dental problems. Regular dental checkups and cleanings are another great way to keep your grin looking its best.
